New Hampshire DUI Statistics at a Glance

Every state in the U.S. has laws that prohibit people from driving if their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is above 0.08 percent, and every U.S. state contains people who are arrested on suspicion of violating those laws. New Hampshire’s driving under the influence (DUI) arrest and conviction rates are similar to those in surrounding states, according to data collected by the Century Council.

In 2009, police arrested 4,676 people in New Hampshire for allegedly driving under the influence. This number is slightly higher than the number of DUI arrests in Vermont in that same year. Meanwhile, Maine saw more DUI arrests in 2009 than New Hampshire – 6,861 in all.

In addition, 5,436 people were arrested that same year for violating other alcohol-related laws in New Hampshire, such as the state’s laws prohibiting minors from buying or consuming alcohol. This number is similar to the number of arrests made in 2009 in Maine and in Vermont for violations of alcohol-related laws that did not involve driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the Century Council’s research, the number of people convicted of drunk driving in New Hampshire and nationwide has decreased in the past ten years. However, drivers are arrested every day on suspicion of breaking drunk driving laws.
